Information for Parents & Carers

Supporting your child’s journey with the RAF Air Cadets.

Age and Commitment

Young people can join from the age of 13, or from 12 if they are in Year 8. This ensures they are old enough to benefit from the wide range of activities we offer, while still young enough to grow with the squadron.

Parade nights are held twice a week for two and a half hours. These evenings are structured, supervised, and designed to balance fun with personal development. Weekend and holiday activities are optional, giving families flexibility. Cadets can choose how much they want to get involved without feeling pressured.

We understand parents want reassurance. Cadet life is designed to fit around school and family commitments, not compete with them. Many cadets thrive by attending regularly, but we always respect individual circumstances.

Uniform and Costs

Uniform

Every cadet is issued a full RAF Air Cadets uniform, worth around £200, on loan from the MOD. This includes all the essentials to parade proudly as part of the squadron. Parents only need to provide footwear such as shoes or boots and combat unfirom although this is not required until a few months after joining. Uniform is a symbol of belonging, and wearing it helps cadets feel part of something bigger.

Costs

Subscriptions are £35 per quarter or £11.67 per month, which helps cover squadron running costs. Camps, expeditions, and specialist courses may have additional fees, but these are kept as low as possible. We never want cost to be a barrier. Staff are happy to discuss support options, and many opportunities are heavily subsidised by the RAF.

Safety and Staff

Your child’s safety is our highest priority. All activities are supervised by trained, qualified, vetted adult volunteers who undergo background checks and safeguarding training. Whether it is flying, adventure training, or a local parade, cadets are always supported by experienced staff.

The RAF Air Cadets has a dedicated safeguarding framework, ensuring every squadron provides a secure and welcoming environment. Parents can be confident that their child is not only safe, but also encouraged to grow in confidence and independence.
